Art Eco Museum: Chongming Island, China
Research based project of museum, major cultural component for the new sustainable city on Chongming Island in China. The design minimizes energy consumption by the use of the maximum amount of renewable energy for building operations. The project incorporates concepts of sustainability into its operations, programming, and facility. The museum uses its collections to produce exhibitions, events, classes, and other programs to educate the public about the natural environment. Project and its site plan represent an attempt to frame a design problem from an environmentally aware perspective. The building has been best located on the chosen site to make the best use of the sun, wind and local topographic contours and features. Use of renewable resources like sun, wind and rain were the primary means to achieve a high performance building design. The project intention is to achieve zero net energy building. This self-sufficient ecological museum and its site can be considered as a case-study, serving as a base for further investigations and strategic planning for the Sustainable City in China.
